Hampden Park Walking Tours: August 22, 24, and 27

When the St. Anthony Park Company began building homes for their new neighborhood in the mid-1880s, one of the first concentrations of development was at Hampden Park. The area also included a small business district, and it was adjacent to St. Anthony Park’s ‘Manufacturing Suburb,’ the industrial area started in 1885.

Many of the late 19th century houses still stand. On this tour, we will walk circle Hampden Park on Bayless, and we’ll also visit neighboring streets, including Manvel and Cromwell.

The tour starts—and ends—in front of Hampden Park Co-op, at the corner of Hampden and Raymond. There is plenty of street parking around the park, so please do not use spaces in the Co-op’s parking lot. This route is approximately twelve blocks long, and the tour is a loop.

Reservations are required. Tours are limited to about 30 participants.

There is a suggested minimum donation of $10 per person, collected at the time of the tour, to help cover tour costs. I will accept cash and checks.

Bring your own earbuds (standard audio jack only) or pick up a colorful (and reusable!) set from me for $1.00. Dress for the weather: don’t forget sunscreen, your water bottle, and whatever conditions demand--an umbrella, a hat, a jacket.

Tours will run showers or shine--unless the rain is heavy, includes lightning and thunder, hail, high winds, or tornadoes. Every effort will be made to reschedule a postponed tour within a day or two, and/or to accommodate people on an upcoming tour on the same topic. Cancelation or postponement decisions will be made approximately one hour before the tour. They will be announced at this webpage and through emails to registered participants.

Reserve a space for one of these Hampden Park tours by sending an email to kristin.km@gmail.com. Be sure to specify the tour topic and date you are requesting.
